Más de 2.500 ciudades en los 50 estados de EE.UU. fueron escenario de la segunda edición de la movilización “No Kings” el pasado 18 de octubre, una protesta masiva contra lo que los organizadores califican como tendencias autoritarias del presidente Donald Trump
El movimiento “No Kings” surgió como respuesta al creciente descontento por el estilo de gobierno de Trump en su segundo mandato. Según una encuesta del Pew Research Center, el 69% de los estadounidenses cree que Trump intenta ejercer más poder que sus predecesores, y entre los demócratas ese porcentaje asciende al 90%. Los manifestantes denuncian el debilitamiento de instituciones, la concentración de poder ejecutivo y la retórica divisiva del mandatario.

La primera edición de “No Kings” se realizó el 14 de junio, coincidiendo con el cumpleaños de Trump. Aunque fue significativa, la reciente protesta superó ampliamente en alcance y participación: millones de personas se movilizaron en más del doble de ciudades que en la edición anterior. Además, esta vez se sumaron manifestaciones en ciudades europeas como Madrid, Málaga y Barcelona.
El presidente Donald Trump reaccionó calificando la protesta como “una farsa organizada por radicales que quieren destruir América”. En un mitin en Ohio, aseguró que “el pueblo real está conmigo, no con los agitadores”, y prometió “mano firme” frente a lo que considera “intentos de sabotaje institucional”

Mientras defensores argumentan que son una expresión legítima de resistencia democrática y señalan que el movimiento es pacífico y busca preservar el equilibrio de poderes. Destacan la diversidad de participantes como reflejo de una sociedad plural.
Los simpatizantes de Trump las califican como “manifestaciones de odio contra América”, acusan a los organizadores de obstruccionismo político y alegan que las protestas generan división en momentos de crisis institucional.

El lema “No Kings” fue inspirado por una frase de Alexander Hamilton sobre el rechazo al monarquismo. Este 18 de octubre participaron más de 3.000 organizaciones civiles, desde sindicatos hasta colectivos artísticos. En Nueva York, se proyectaron mensajes en edificios emblemáticos como el Empire State. Hubo más de 500 intervenciones musicales y teatrales en plazas públicas.
